The Shift to Waterborne Alkyds: A Sustainable Turn for the Alkyd Resin Market
As industries and governments double down on environmental compliance, the alkyd resin market is seeing a major transformation with the rise of waterborne alkyd resins.
Traditional alkyds are solvent-heavy, contributing to air pollution and VOC emissions. To combat this, manufacturers are now developing water-reducible alkyds that maintain high performance while being safer for the environment and human health.
Waterborne alkyds offer comparable durability, gloss, and adhesion to their solvent-based counterparts—making them ideal for interior and exterior architectural coatings. They also dry faster, have reduced odor, and are compatible with conventional application equipment.
This shift is especially important in North America and Europe, where VOC regulations are among the strictest. Major paint producers are responding by reformulating products to include waterborne alkyds or hybrid resins.
Asia-Pacific is also catching up, driven by increasing awareness of eco-friendly products and government-led environmental initiatives. In particular, China and India are key markets transitioning toward greener coatings in construction and infrastructure sectors.
With regulatory pressure mounting and consumer preferences evolving, the alkyd resin market is firmly on the path toward sustainability.
